8-Some comments


Equipment at FR5DN :

On 2m:
In "beacon mode", 80w out into 17el F9FT-13dbd yagi at 6m above ground.
Old PC dedicated to the 2m station for digital modes and AIS receiver (modified FT-2500M).
For qso, i can use up to 150w out max in shack
Mast mounted LNA, some
18db gain and around 0.6db NF, probably more.
Coax is a average low loss rigid coax equivalent to LCF14-50, attenuation 5db/100m, length of some 22m (let say 1db loss).
I use separate TX and RX lines, which make things much more flexible, RX line is standard RG-213.
RX is Kenwood R-5000.
TRX for beacon and qso is dedicated Kenwood TR-9000.

These qso are in reach of medium stations for sure.

On 70cms:
I usually run 8x21el with mast mounted LNA (>30db gain, and 0.4db NF).

But, a week or so before the opening, my winch broke, and all array felt down the tower, breaking antennas, H frame, coax, etc, etc, you can easily imagine the situation...

On 09/02, after the qso with ZS5Y Derek on 2m, i asked him to try 70cms, even if i had no antenna on 70cms, and so i used the 2m yagi.
Swr was not perfect as expected but not that high as expected. I called, but without any luck, and then switched back on 2m.

After some email exchange with Derek, he pushed me to try and put up a repaired yagi for 70cms. I wanted to do so, but the fact that Derek told me this, motivated me really harder (Tks Derek!!!) , and so, as said, i worked hard after qrl to get an antenna up the tower. As i had to almost "rebuild" the outside 70cms stations, new temporary winch, cutting/mounting coax, repairing/fixing antenna, verifying rotator ok, testing swr, etc...i had no time to get second coax for rx, and so no relay and no LNA on the tower, as dark was there. Anyway, i was "ready" for some 70cms action!

E-mailed Derek to let him know, that FR was on the air on 432Mhz as well...

On 70cms, i was running a single 21 el yagi at 7m above ground.

Low loss coax, mixed length of hardline 7/8 and some length of lcf14-50.
Power was about 250-300w at first, then decreased to 150w, maybe a bit less. On SSB i was in the 150w range, down to 100w on some tx.
I used NO LNA! and Derek was really strong on some sequence, even if he was 20w i would have got him OK in JT mode (and cw)!



Just before 17z, the first ever 70cms tropospheric ducting qso was achieved, 2655kms, on JT65b; then i asked Derek to qsy SSB, and managed another 
.qso!

Equipment at ZS5Y
On 2m
: 2M12 13dbd yagi with no preamp and brick PA with
150w.
On 70cms : 4x12el, 60w, LNA.


Equipment at ZS5LEE

2m: I was using a Kenwwod TS2000X standard 100W Output into a single M2 2M18XXX
(18el Yagi Horizontal Polarization) feed line 7/8" hard line. No LNA was used during the qso.

That last opening was for long period, as least in 2m for sure.
I miss a 70cms beacon in such situation, so no idea how long the 432Mhz was opened...

So far, since the first on 2m in 2008, almost all signals were speaker copy. Modes we have operated on 2m and 70cms were SSB, digital, and ...FM.
I miss cw.

Also, next opening, if possible, i'd like to make some tests regarding the power, and try to go as low as possible.
It could be just funny...

Alone, you can't qso, and i really want here to thank all the ZS operators who monitored the bands, waiting for the opening, and finally succeeded after seriously preparing their station. Without You, there would be NO QSO, that is a fact!...
